Today I took an a portrait assignment for the Daily Orange.
Unfortunately, I had less than an hour today to shoot with Rob Faugno, a Syracuse student training for a marathon to raise money for his sister and the Make A Wish Foundation. Meeting people with passion is always a special experience, and in life, family can be an extremely strong motivational force. Seeing Rob dedicate himself to training as hard as he is to accomplish his goals is truly a wonderful sight to see. Check out the awesome Daily Orange story on him: http://dailyorange.com/2014/03/runs-in-the-family-rob-faugno-maps-out-54-mile-trek-to-honor-sister-benefit-make-a-wish/
Livingston Car Accident Aftermath
I was alerted to a car crash on Livingston today, and I went to cover it for the Daily Orange. When I arrived, it was more of the "aftermath" of the crash, and my prayers go out to anyone injured in the accident.
Vince Camuto Fashion Shoot
Yesterday I had the opportunity to help out my good friend Alina with a little project. She's campus representative her at Syracuse for designer Vince Camuto (VC), and VC sent her some clothing items to model for the official VC blog. We took a little trip downtown to do a photo shoot, and thankfully we dodged the forecasted rain, and got some pretty cool pics. Here are my strongest shots from the take:
The Mormon Temple
This was my first ever try at composite imaging. Not sure why I've strayed so far from it since I'm in love with beautiful landscapes, but I really love the final outcome. This is only 3 images composited together, and there was some post production editing in Lightroom and Photoshop. I love the way it came out though, and it really brings justice to the dreary 495 corridor that so many people sit bumper to bumper in every day coming home from work.
The Pious Patriot
This is another shot from my studio time Sunday night that I think came out pretty cool. It wasn't shot in black and white, but was changed in post production. I had fun with the edit, and I'm hoping to definitely do some more work with Alex and his girlfriend in the studio after I come back from spring break.
Commercial Assignment
This photograph was an assignment for my MPD 300 photography class, and the goal was to create a commercial piece, and I got the idea to use my love for watches to play around with this concept. My buddy Alex Gentry and his girlfriend were able to help me out with this assignment, and they were extremely cooperative despite all the trouble we had (Drew Osumi helped me with the lighting) with the equipment at the Lightwork Studios. Our setup was an overhead soft box for the hair light, a beauty dish on a strobe for the watch and face light, and a honeycomb on a strobe for the side of his head. I wanted to get weird with this assignment, and by weird I mean different. I had no intention of this photo being degrading towards women, and I hope nobody takes it this way. It is photography, and it is art. I think the photo is pretty eye-catching, and that is definitely something I can appreciate about it.
I always have fun messing around in the studio, and I'm going to make it my goal to get into the studio at least once a week to get better at lighting. I threw the Rolex symbol on the photo for commercial purposes, but in no way am I claiming any affiliation with Rolex. I definitely wish I had more time to play around with the lighting, and I wish I had put more light on the eye of Alex, as I feel it would give the photograph a lot more emotion. Eyes are crucial. This photo was strictly for educational use for my MPD 300 class, and will not be used for any other purpose.
Home Sweet Snow.
We just arrived back in the Cuse' after a long weekend in Charlottesville, VA for the Syracuse vs. UVA basketball and lacrosse game. Unfortunately we weren't victorious in either, but traveling for the Daily Orange is always a fun experience, and I love road trips...especially when you're with your friends. There was no indoor work area at Klöckner Stadium (where the lacrosse game was held), so Phil and Josh (sports writers for the Daily Orange) and I worked outside the entire time.
Thankfully, Charlottesville is a lot warmer than Syracuse, and the chilly evening brought temperatures in the mid 30's, which wasn't too hard to deal with when you're used to living in the arctic. Here are some pics from the Syracuse vs. UVA game, and more can be found in my gallery @ http://dailyorange.com/2014/03/gallery-no-6-syracuse-falls-to-no-4-virginia-17-12-still-winless-in-conference/ (final score: 12 - 17)
First Blog Post.
This is my first official blog post.
I've always used flickr for posting the pictures I take on an everyday basis, but I've decided that I wanted to take that a step forward, and create a blog that I can use to efficiently document my life and my photography. I'm a big fan of Joey Lawrence and Joe McNally's blog, and I was even inspired by my good friend Drew Osumi's blog (http://www.osumi.photography/osumi-blog/), and though he doesn't post pictures on it half as often as I think he should, I wanted to do something kind of similar. I felt like having a blog would motivate me to constantly produce creative new material, and I thought it would be a lot of fun. Anyways, here goes my first try!
These photos were taken as part of an unfortunate last minute project I had to get in for my MPD 300 class. I struggled with coming up with a good plan for how exactly I was going to carry out the project, and I hate going into an assignment unprepared.
The assignment was to photograph a block of space, and by block I don't mean cube, but rather, I literally mean a street or area of space that might fit the confines of a "block." We had a similar assignment a few weeks ago that instead confined the area to 10 feet of space. The change in criteria drastically changed the results of the assignment, and I wasn't very happy with some of that pictures I submitted. Nonetheless, here are a few of them.
