Road Trip

I've really been bad about posting to my blog, though as of today I'm going to try and be better about it. I went on a road trip to NC, TN, and VA last week with my roommate and one of my closest friends from Syracuse, and we had a blast. We traveled to the Linville Gorge in North Carolina, and made our way through the Blue Ridge Parkway to a number of different destinations down south including Mt. Mitchell, which we hardly got to spend any time at because of the rain, Asheville, and even the Cumberland Gap (though it was quite out of the way). We camped three of the four nights, but had to stay in a hotel one night due to the horrible weather. Most of my photos from the trip are landscapes, and I love how some of them came out!

Double OT Victory

I had the opportunity to cover one of the most intense lacrosse games I have ever witnessed Saturday evening when Syracuse took on UNC in the dome. It ended in an epic double overtime goal scored by Billy Ward, and stories on the game can be read at dailyorange.com!

It was already a disaster of a day for me, and as soon as I was unloading my gear on the sidelines, I realized that I had forgot my monopod. This made shooting with my rented D4 and 200-400mm f/4 extremely difficult, and thankfully one of the friendly photographers who was also covering the game blessed me with his car keys at half time, and I was able to run down to his car and grab an extra monopod that he had laying in the back seat.

Water Tower View

This evening, I went on a little adventure up to some nearby water towers with the hope that I would be able to climb one to capture some epic sunset landscapes over campus and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, I was ill-prepared for the climbing task that lay ahead of me due to the size of my tripod, so I ended up not climbing up, and just shooting from the ground around the towers.

I will definitely be making another trip in the near future to get the shots I was looking for, and thankfully I ended up catching a beautiful sunset, which is always a good way to spend your evening.

Schoellkopf Field

Unfortunately, I didn't bring any wide lenses with me for this game. This photo was taken with my Iphone. Long glass only today with this rented D4 and a trusty 200-400 f4 as well.

Cathy Mulford and St. Baldrick's

Last week I was notified about a story that was going to be running in the Daily Orange about an amazing woman named Cathy Mulford, a SU librarian who was going to be shaving her head as a part of the St. Baldrick's Founding shaving event in support of childhood cancer research. Mulford's best friend, Cheryl Pellizzari, who survived non-Hodgkin lymphoma, was her inspiration to raise money to help find a cure for cancer.

I took on the assignment, and when I was introduced to Cathy, she immediately struck me as one of the kindest, most bubbly and joyful people I had ever met. She was warm, sweet, and loved laughing just as much as I did. She had beautiful red hair with a tint of strawberry blonde in it, and it takes an incredibly strong woman to agree to chop it all off for something she cares so much about.

The Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant in downtown Syracuse was vibrant with energy. Both young and elderly women were throwing down shots of Jameson before stepping up to wooden stools to get their heads shaved. The place was absolutely packed with people either getting shaved, or cheering for their friends or loved ones doing the same. From young children to teenaged girls to a biker gang, and even the elderly. People from all over brought smiles, tears, and an incredibly emotional atmosphere to the small pub, united by the common goal of raising money for a cause that was universally heartfelt.

My friend Jocelyn Delaney wrote an incredible story about Cathy and the event for the Daily Orange, and it can be read here:

Playing with Speedlights

We had a little exercise in my photo lab this past Friday involving speed lights. This is Renee being...well, quite frankly, being Renee. This was shot on the upper center balcony inside Hendricks Chapel.

Memories.

I just rediscovered an incredible powerful photo that I had taken on my iphone during last summer (2013) while my precious aunt was still with us. Her life was taken by brain cancer this past fall.
The quality isn't great, and at the time the camera on my Iphone was cracked... but I could care less. When I look at this picture, I can feel the companionship. The little dog that my aunt rescued stuck with her day in and day out. Through her misery, and until the very end.
